Thistledown Artisan Works - a blend of wood and steel

Thistledown has become an amalgam of a couple of the artisan trades - generally fine woodworking and steel artistry.  Over the years we have developed our own "small shop personality", catering to our clients special needs and wants.  We've created a host of unique products - from personalized canoe/kayak trailers to wood-fired brick artisan ovens.  We've even built specialized food trailers with wood-fired artisan ovens for our clients who wanted to sell pizza at festivals.  We have always had a "Can Do" attitude and it is reflected in our many accomplishments.  Even now, in our more mature years, we're always interested in new projects.

That said, we are offering a few products that are near and dear to us.  The first is our "Southern Breeze" wind chimes. Designed to be sturdy, they are made with aircraft grade stainless steel stranded wire, hardwood (white oak) and use plexiglass teardrop sails on spinners.    We have several spread around our farm and workshop/barn and absolutely love their harmony as they dance in the breeze.  We live in our tiny house that we built several years ago, and sleep in the loft with open windows on 3 sides. Each evening, we are lulled to sleep by our gentle, melodious chime music. They are, of course, powered exclusively by Mother Nature and provide a truly relaxing and calming atmospere to our lives.

Shelia is a wonderful sketch artist and Dave is an award winning photographer, so we have an special interest in displaying wall-art.  That sparked an interest in and the start of our frame (and framing) business.  We make frames in our workshop/barn using hardwoods like red oak and maple and softwoods like pine and poplar.  All of our frames are splined in the four corners to make them bombproof and beautiful.  We also use museum quality P99 plexiglass for both strength and durability.  We also make frames in any size to fit any art piece or photograph.  NOTE: pretty much every photograph taken today has a 2/3 ratio - just like 35mm cameras.  The correct frame sizes would then be 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, etc.  The old standards of 8x10 and 11x14 should have been discarded long ago - they just don't fit today's images.

We have started designing sturdy and eye-pleasing mail box posts (complete with mail boxes).  There are many possibilities, but we are working with heavy 6x6 lumber and 11 guage by 2" flat steel to create uniquely beautiful mail box/post combinations.
